6th grade inequalities on a number line worksheets

Inequalities on a number line connect a graph to a statement like x > 3. Sixth graders read a graphed ray (open circle, arrow left or right) and write the inequality it shows, then test which values make an inequality true.

The kind of problems you'll get

Write the inequality the graph shows, or circle the values that make it true.

  1. Inequality:

    Answer: x < 3

  2. Circle every value that makes x > −1 true: −3 −1 3
  3. Circle every value that makes x > 2 true: −1 0 5

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Start every graph with two questions: where is the circle, and which way does the arrow point? The circle gives the boundary number, the arrow gives the symbol. Then have your child name two numbers that fit the graph and one that doesn't. Naming solutions makes the symbol mean something.

Watch for: Kids read the circled number as the answer. The graph shows a whole set of numbers, so the answer is an inequality like x > 3, not a single value. An open circle looks like it includes the number. Open means the boundary itself is not a solution.

Common questions about inequalities on a number line

What does the open circle mean?
The boundary number itself is not a solution. An open circle at 3 with the arrow pointing right means every number greater than 3 works, but 3 does not.
Do these worksheets use ≤ and ≥?
No, this sheet stays with strict inequalities: open circles and the symbols > and <. That matches how 6th grade introduces graphing solution sets.
