How to teach this

The classic stumble at this level is starting one strategy and drifting into the other, so ask your child to say the plan out loud before multiplying anything: "I'm splitting" or "I'm subtracting." Have them mark the cut line or the missing corner right on the figure. When an answer looks off, checking the units first catches the quiet errors: every area here ends in sq m or sq cm.

Watch for: Kids mix the split-and-add and subtract strategies halfway through. Pick one path, finish it, then use the other path as a check if there's time. Kids drop the square in the unit and write 154 m. Area is measured in square meters, so the answer is 154 sq m.

Common questions about area of composite figures

How is this different from the third grade version?
Same L-shaped figures, bigger numbers. Dimensions run up to 20 and units switch between meters and centimeters, so the arithmetic asks more of your child while the strategy stays familiar.
Does my child need a formula sheet?
No. Everything here is rectangle area, length times width, applied twice. The real skill is choosing a plan, splitting or subtracting, and carrying it through cleanly.
