How to teach this

Build the table together first: 10^1 = 10, 10^2 = 100, 10^3 = 1000, and have your child say what the exponent matches: the number of zeros, the number of place-value shifts. Phrase every answer as a shift ("45 slides two places left") rather than "add two zeros," so the rule still works when decimals arrive. Ask the reverse question too: how many tens multiply to make 10,000?

Watch for: Kids multiply the base by the exponent and write 30 for 10^3. The exponent counts how many tens to multiply, so 10^3 = 1000. Kids learn 'just add zeros.' It works for whole numbers, but the honest rule is that digits shift left, which is the version that survives decimals.
