How to teach this

Turn every pair into a walk: start at 0, stroll along the bottom for the first number, then climb for the second. If your child plots (4, 3) when the sheet says (3, 4), don't relabel it as careless. The order is a convention, and conventions need rehearsal. A phrase like "run before you jump" or "along the hall, then up the stairs" usually makes it stick.

Watch for: Kids swap the pair and plot (4, 3) for (3, 4). Across comes first, up comes second, every time. Kids reverse a coordinate's job mid-plot, climbing first and walking second. On four-quadrant grids the signs ride along: left of zero is negative x, below is negative y.

Common questions about coordinate plane

What will my child actually do on the sheet?

Two things. Reading items show a labeled point A on the grid and ask where it is, so your child writes a pair like (3, 4). Plotting items give the pair and ask your child to mark the grid.

Which number goes first in the pair?

The across number. (3, 4) means go right 3 along the bottom, then up 4: across first, up second, every time. Mixing the order is the most common slip, so it's worth saying out loud.
