How to teach this

Fold a strip of paper into four equal parts and shade one ("this is one fourth"), then shade another and ask what changed. Only the top number moves. If shading is hard to count on the sheet, have your child tick each shaded part with a pencil first.

Watch for: Kids count the shaded parts for both numbers. The bottom counts all the equal parts, the top counts only the shaded ones. The bigger the bottom number, the bigger the fraction. More parts means smaller parts, so 1/8 is smaller than 1/2.

Common questions about unit fractions & parts of a whole

What is a unit fraction?
A fraction with 1 on top, exactly one of the equal parts. It's the building block: 3/4 is just three of the 1/4 pieces, and these sheets build that idea from the picture up.
Does my child need to draw or shade anything?
No. Every bar is printed and shaded already. The work is reading the picture and writing the fraction on the line.
