How to teach this
Have your child count the flats first, then the rods, then the units, saying the values aloud: "two hundred, fifty, three." When a group is missing, ask what goes in that place before they write anything. Zeros as placeholders are the sticking point at this age, so celebrate every correctly placed zero.
Watch for: Kids write 4007 for 4 hundreds and 7 ones. A zero holds the empty tens place, so the number is 407. Kids count every block as one. A flat is worth 100 and a rod is worth 10, so count by value, not by piece.
Common questions about hundreds, tens & ones
- What kind of problems are on these worksheets?
- Each sheet gives groups of hundreds, tens, and ones, and your child writes the three-digit number they make. Every print generates a fresh set.
- My child writes 4007 instead of 407. Is that normal?
- Very. It means they understand the values but not yet that a zero holds an empty place. These sheets give exactly that practice.
